Today marks one week from the day that we arrived in
Manakara!! It is hard to believe that it has only been a week. In just seven short days we have become like
local celebrities, being awesome and drawing a crowd everywhere we go. To
celebrate our one-week-aversary we went out to a little restaurant in town and
it was an experience…to say the least. When
we got to the restaurant, it was right around dinner time, but no one else was
there. We probably should have taken
that as a sign and went someplace else but hey, you live and you learn; we were
also very gung-ho and determined to be adventurous. So we get there, we sit down, you know,
normal restaurant stuff and then the fun began.
We are only into our third day of our language study so we couldn’t really
understand much on the menu and we had a difficult time communicating with the
waitress. She had each of us write our
orders down on a piece of paper so if we got the wrong thing it was no one’s
fault but our own (I didn't realize this crafty technique until later). I ordered the Potage au Legume (or something like
that) and I crossed my fingers that it would be good. We waited for about an hour until we got our
food and I am pretty sure that in that time, they sent someone to buy the
ingredients for some of our meals. I am
not positive, but we all ordered Pommes
Frites (fried potatoes) and we
watched one of the employees leave after we placed our orders and then come
back with a bag of potatoes. Deductive
reasoning says he bought them for us, but I’ve been wrong [once] before. While we waited for that hour and second guessed
our choice of restaurant we laughed, and we laughed, and we laughed. When the food finally came it was OK, but
spending the time together, and laughing at ourselves until we almost cried was
so much fun! God is so amazing, He can
take sub-par service and mediocre food at a restaurant and use it to stretch us
and grow us closer as a team. He’s good.
